William Seltzer Rice found seemingly endless inspiration in the natural world, creating an extensive body of work that included watercolors, drawings, photographs, etchings, and block prints.

Rice arrived in Northern California in 1900, just as the region's Arts and Crafts movement was beginning to flourish. He later taught at several schools, including the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, an important center for the movement.

Block printing proved particularly well suited to the Arts and Crafts philosophy, allowing beautifully designed artwork to be reproduced and made available to a wider audience at an affordable price.

A skilled craftsman as well as an accomplished artist, Rice personally designed, carved, and printed his blocks, bringing every stage of the printmaking process under his own hand. Today, his masterful artwork can be found in public and private collections around the world.
