Working during an era of rapid industrialization and urban growth in Japan, Kawase Hasui turned his artistic attention toward quieter places. His celebrated images capture rural landscapes, peaceful waterways, and the subtle transformations of the natural world through the changing seasons.

Light plays an especially important role in Hasui's work. Sunlight and moonlight illuminate land and water, creating atmospheric scenes filled with stillness, reflection, and an extraordinary sense of place.

Often traveling in search of inspiration, Hasui recorded the landscapes he encountered in watercolor sketches. He then brought those studies to the studio of publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō, where they were transformed into meticulously crafted woodblock prints.

Recognized as one of the greatest artists of the shin hanga movement, Hasui created more than 600 woodblock prints during his remarkable 40-year career.
