Her compositions moved boldly away from conventional figurative art, combining vivid color, geometric forms, organic shapes, symbols, and an extraordinary sense of movement.

During her lifetime, af Klint primarily exhibited her more traditional artwork. Believing the world was not yet ready to understand her abstract masterpiece, The Paintings for the Temple, she stipulated that her work remain unseen until 20 years after her death.
